Science and Engineering Scholarship Program

One of our goals is to produce a higher ratio of qualified science and engineering experts and practitioners in the Philippines. Our scholarship program helps high-achieving Filipinos in need pursue technical educations. There are over 100 students currently on PhilDev-Shell and PhilDev-Goldilocks scholarships at Philippine Universities. In the US, PhilDev began offering scholarships for the 2018 school year in partnership with Goldilocks.

The PhilDev Science & Engineering Scholarship Program provides more than funding. We offer our scholars access to mentors, coaching and counseling for concerns outside of their studies, and guidance with internship and job placement. We also take all scholars on an annual summer retreat. Scholars from all parts of the Philippines gather for a 3-day teaching and learning event. They share their skills in both individual and team settings, work on real-world problems and consult with attending experts.

Program FAQs

To whom does the program award scholarships?

PhilDev works with donors to create a list of the type of students to whom the scholarships are aimed. It may differ from donor to donor depending on their specific philosophies and/or needs. In general, however, recipients are:

1. Students attending one of our partner universities.

2. Undergraduate students majoring in specific degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

3. Students displaying academic excellence and civic involvement.

Who are PhilDev's partner universities?

Applicants must be students of our partner universities in order to apply:

Central Luzon State University

De La Salle University – Manila

Mapua Institute of Technology – Manila

University of the Philippines Diliman - Quezon City

University of the Philippines Los Baños – Laguna

University of Sto. Tomas – Manila

University of San Carlos – Cebu City

MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology – Iligan City

Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan – Cagayan de Oro City

Batangas State University

In what specific degree fields must a student be enrolled to qualify?

For academic year 2016-2017, scholarships are only available for the following degrees: BS Chemical Engineering, BS Electrical Engineering and BS Mechanical Engineering.

What specifically are the "academic excellence and civic involvement" requirements?

To qualify, an applicant must have a General Weighted Average (GWA) of 90% or above (or its point-system equivalent). We strongly consider the student's civic involvement by looking for participation in co-curricular activities, leadership experience, community involvement, and other factors.

What other requirements are there for selection?

The candidate must also meet the following requirements.

1. Demonstrate a certain level of financial need (family gross income below P500,000 per year).

2. Must be in his/her sophomore year or higher.

3. He/She must be a Filipino citizen, without a pending immigration application to any foreign country.

4. Other requirements that the donor may require.

Who provides the funds for the scholarships?

The scholarships are funded by donors (companies, non-profits, organizations or individuals) and administered by PhilDev S&T Foundation - Manila. Currently, PhilDev is extremely proud to have Shell as the program's first donor. Additionally, PhilDev continues to approach other potential donors for participation.

How much does the scholarship cover?

Scholarships cover school tuition and miscellaneous fees. Stipends and allowances may be awarded to some students with extenuating circumstances. The grant is renewable every semester until the recipient finishes his/her degree, subject to compliance with scholarship stipulations.

Does PhilDev or the donor require anything of the students in return?

The scholars are expected to maintain their program eligibility as described in the requirements below. Additionally, as the purpose of this program is to uplift Pinoys and the Philippines in general, PhilDev requires graduating scholars to remain in the Philippines for at least 5 years after graduation. Aside from these requirements, students are not beholden to the donors upon completion of the program. When a scholar graduates, the donor may offer him/her a position in their company, but the student is not obliged to accept it.

Does the scholarship offer anything else other than funds?

Yes! PhilDev Program Officers meet regularly with students to mentor and guide them through their university years. Soon, scholars will also be paired with a mentor from the donor organization that could give them more advice on their chosen profession and potential opportunities. PhilDev also organizes various events throughout the year including an annual summer camp where scholars learn critical career skills like resume writing, public speaking, building confidence, and other topics.

How does one apply for a PHILIPPINE scholarship?

Applicants may go to the Scholarships/Admissions/Financial Aid offices of the above partner universities for the application form, scholarship stipulations and a list of required documents. Deadline for submission of accomplished application forms are determined by partner universities. Qualified applicants shortlisted by partner universities go through a panel interview for final screening and selection.
