March 28, 2025 – Palo Alto, CA – “Never underestimate the power of a community of Kababayans.” Guided by this belief and inspired by Dr. Jose Rizal’s words—“He who does not look back from where they came from will never reach their destination”—PhilDev launched the first in a series of community gatherings designed to empower Filipinos in STEM through education, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Held in honor of Women’s History Month, the event brought together industry leaders to foster collaboration, mentorship, and collective impact under this year’s theme: “Be the Bridge.” The initiative aims to cultivate a sustainable network that supports and uplifts Filipino professionals.
The gathering was led by Dolores Bernardo, Executive Coach & Talent Management Consultant at Makena, who set the stage for meaningful conversations. Attendees reflected on the wisdom of notable Filipina changemakers, sharing insights that resonated with their personal and professional journeys.
Olivia de Jesus, Executive Director of PhilDev, reinforced the nonprofit’s mission and the vital role the community plays in driving systemic change. She was joined by Oliver Segovia, Founder & CEO of AVA Online Group, who introduced PAIR (Philippine AI Retreat)—a groundbreaking event in Palo Alto this June. PAIR will convene top AI researchers, founders, and engineers solving critical challenges in the Philippines, with PhilDev as a key partner in fostering collaboration between Silicon Valley and the Filipino tech ecosystem.
A fireside chat, moderated by Regina Manzana-Sawhney, PhilDev’s Community Chair, featured Emily Nishi, Chief People Officer at Discord. Emily shared how her Filipino heritage shaped her leadership, the lessons she’s learned from top executives in tech. Emily also gave advice on how to play up the unique strengths Filipinos bring to the industry, such as “investing in relationships” as our culture is deeply rooted in creating bonds with others. The conversation sparked an engaging discussion on improving Filipino representation in STEM, navigating career growth, and fostering inclusive workplaces.
“Be the Bridge” culminated in a powerful call to action—many attendees stepped up to become
mentors, champions, and donors, demonstrating the collective strength of a connected community.
Looking Ahead: US-Philippines AI Summit at Stanford
PhilDev continues to bridge opportunities between Filipino professionals and Silicon Valley. The next gathering takes place on June 20, 2025, at Stanford University, with the US-Philippines AI Summit, PAIR’s culminating public event co-presented by PhilDev and the Stanford US-Asia Tech Management Center. Maria Banatao, PhilDev Trustee, stated, “This event will further connect Philippines-focused leaders in AI and innovation, ensuring a future where more Filipinos thrive in global tech.”
